Eddie Wharez Awards 2017

On the night of January 29, 2017, Puerto Peñasco’s Municipal Auditorium was filled with art, elegancy, and creativity as it hosted the Eddie Wharez Awards 2017. The event where local and foreign artist are awarded in recognition for their outstanding contribution in making our town to stand out. This year’s hosts for the awards were Ruben Escalante and Maru Zacatelco. Puerto Peñasco’s Mayor Kiko Munro assigned Nina Mier Morales (director of art & culture) to give an opening speech, followed by a description of the meaning and birth of the Eddie Wharez Awards by Eddie Wharez. He also added that behind this event, there are people who place their time and effort to make this possible. Pamela Palasuelos is invited on stage for the first performance for a singing performance that cheers the crowd. This year’s categories for the awards and awardees were;
• Consolidated Artist: award presented by Mayra Garcia, awardee; Randy Vega

• Social Media Popularit: award presented by Guille Salazar, awardee; Dianna Aurelia Arzaga Beltran

• Foreign Contribution of Art & Culture: presented by Manuel Martinez, awardee; Ramses Shaira

• Trayectory Artist: presented by Nina Mier, awardee; Rosalinda Mendoza

• Juvenille Artist Group: presented by Gisela Gamboa, awardee; Aylin Aguilar

• Artist Group: presented by Beatriz Salido, awardee; Grupo de Teatro Taide

• Artisian of the Year: received by Eddie Wharez in behalf of awardee;Ricardo Monjaras

• Cultural Promoter: presented by Erick Plata, awardee; Laura Rivera

• Outstanding Character: presented by Maricela Luna, awardees Loli Monteverde & Daniel Almada

Eddie Wharez Gave the closing speech explaining that even in despair, may the spirit creativity live and be recognized. He wanted to thank and recognize two people for going out of their way to help to find and introduce Puerto Peñasco to other cities not only in Mexico but in the United States as well. North American Peggy Turk was recognized for her dedication in preserving Puerto Peñasco’s art and culture. Puerto Peñasco’s Irlanda Castro was recognized for taking our town’s culture to others. For the closing performance, Pamela Palasuelos gave a singing performace to dismiss the event. We hope to see you in the next awards.
